The Regeneration Project

The regeneration project of the Maryhill Burgh Halls is the biggest project of the Halls to date. The Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust is a community led organisation set up specifically for the purposes of the redevelopment of the Burgh Halls and its long term management, bringing the Halls back into the heart of the Maryhill community. Through the refurbishment, selective demolition and new build, the Trust has developed a viable and self supporting building that offers facilities for the local community as well as flexible facilities for businesses, third sector and social economy and community organisations located in the area. It has also been able to bring Maryhill Burgh Halls, an historically important building that has been little used in recent years, back into the public arena.

Building work commenced in November 2009, and the official opening occurred in April 2012. You can read more about the project here.

Sounds of maryhill

The Sounds of Maryhill project was originated by a local Glasgow artist, Aya Iguchi-Sherry in 2016. Aya and the Trust worked with schools, residential groups and the local health centre to collect sound recordings from the area, which they felt represented where they lived.  The project explored the relationship between people, sound, place, and everyday life, and increased awareness of the local environment. The collected sounds were then synced onto a Sound Map, creating an innovative interpretation of Maryhill’s heritage. This project is still open to new sounds.

Interactive Heritage App

 The app was created in collaboration with the Appstillery and contained one walking trail, 28 points of interest, 20 stained glass panels, an archive map and a wartime aerial photo. It showed historic buildings (including the restored Maryhill Burgh Halls and Maryhill Leisure Centre), ancient monuments (such as the canal locks and aqueduct), and one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s least well known buildings.

The Maryhill Songbook

Maryhill Heritage Choir have composed new melodies to turn 19th-century poetry from our archive into songs which tell stories of Maryhill and its community between 1822 and 1905. 

This exciting project, which reveals more of Maryhill’s little-known history, was grant aided by Creative Scotland.

The poets included are Phillip Smith, Rab the Ranter, Humphrey Clinker, Dr Thomas Lyle, and Alexander Bennie McLucky.
