Windows of the North West

Window Wanderland transforms everyday streets into magical, outdoor galleries, where anything goes and you never know what’s around the next corner. Friends of Maryhill Park are bringing the wanderland trail to Maryhill on Saturday 10th March. 

Window Wanderland is an evening arts trail, where people in a small neighbourhood decorate and light up their windows, inviting neighbours and the wider community to wander the streets and look at their home-made exhibition.

If you'd like to get involved, join us with Maryhill Park on 24th February to prepare your window designs. Artist Kate Colin will be running a workshop to inspire ideas and help with making your designs. See below for more details:

Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust is delighted to host the Lost Glasgow - More Than Just Memories exhibition from 27th November 2017 until 27th February 2018, on loan from Glasgow City Heritage Trust.To celebrate local heritage and illuminate the exhibition’s themes, we are presenting a series of events which delve into Glasgow’s dynamic history.

Join us for an evening of discovery as we uncover old footage of Maryhill and celebrate local cultural heritage. Maryhill, once a vast green space quickly became an industrial heartland in the 19th century and this dynamic community has continued to change shape ever since. Footage on loan from Scotland's Moving Image Archive captures the changes in Maryhill in the 1960s, with snapshots of the Forth and Clyde Canal, the demolition of the Maryhill barracks and opening of the Wynford Estate. Watch history unfold in these silent films put to specially produced music created by Gerry Lyons.

The Puppet Animation Festival is the UK’s largest performing arts event for children and families and includes puppet-making, stop-motion animation workshops, puppet theatre and animated films. Join us to celebrate this year’s festival with theatre shows, puppet making workshops, sensory storytelling and Disney favourites in the beautiful surroundings of Maryhill Burgh Halls. Our events are suitable for families with opportunities for all ages and abilities to discover the art of storytelling and puppetry

What About The Women? 

A local women's history talk by Anabel Marsh

Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust are delighted to host the “Lost Glasgow – More Than Just Memories” exhibition from 27th November 2017 until 27th February 2018, on loan from Glasgow City Heritage Trust.

To celebrate our local heritage and illuminate the exhibition’s themes, we are presenting a series of talks delving into Glasgow’s dynamic history. The famous Victorian stained glass windows on display at Maryhill Burgh Halls depict Maryhill workers and trades in the busy Victorian era, and tell the story of one of Glasgow’s historic burghs. However, only two of the original 20 panels portray women. This conspicuous lack of representation sparked the interest of local Glasgow Women’s Library and Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust volunteer, Anabel Marsh. She did a lot more digging, and her talk entitled “What About the Women?” highlights the forgotten histories of women in Maryhill and Glasgow, dating back to the 18th century. Join us on to hear Anabel share the stories of Glasgow women in industry, the arts and politics throughout the ages.

The Maryhill Songbook Launch

The Maryhill Songbook

Nineteenth-century poems are brought vividly to life with the launch of The Maryhill Songbook. Join us as Maryhill Heritage Choir tell Maryhill’s story, inspired by historic poems from our archive, and set to their new melodies.

Maryhill Heritage Choir have composed new melodies to turn 19th-century poetry from our archive into songs which tell stories of Maryhill and its community between 1822 and 1905. Hear the poems come to life in our celebration of local arts, culture and heritage at Maryhill Burgh Halls.

Norry Wilson has been at the heart of the popular Lost Glasgow Facebook page since 2014 which has attracted a 135,000 global following. The site posts archive photographs which brings stories and memories to light of Glasgow, its buildings, its people and its dynamic history. Glasgow City Heritage Trust teamed up with Lost Glasgow in 2017 to 'present an exhibition devoted to the documentation, discussion and appreciation of Glasgow’s changing architecture and its community throughout the last few centuries'. After a popular run in the city centre, the exhibition is open again this winter at the Burgh Halls. 

Join Lost Glasgow at Maryhill Burgh Halls for an evening of reminiscence, storytelling and delving into Glasgow's heritage on Wednesday 6th December. Norry will tell us the story of how the exhibition was put together and give us a special insight into the images that couldn't make it into to the exhibition. 

Lost Glasgow is all about sharing stories and memories. Why not bring along a historic photo of the city to share with us and the story that goes with it. You never know, you may find someone that knows someone that knows someone who took it/worked there/played there/lived there!

Maryhill nature discovery trail

Join us for the launch of our new Maryhill Nature Trail on Saturday 25th November. 

Discover the nature which thrives and survives around Maryhill's local waterways with our new trails. As a special event for the launch of this great new resource, we invite families to join us on a guided walk led by our heritage team, with hands on discovery activities throughout to explore and interpret the unique urban and natural landscape of Maryhill. 

11am - 12.30pm

The walks will start at 11am, last approx 1 hour and finish at Maryhill Burgh Halls with free refreshments available after the walk at the Burgh Halls. 

This is a free event.

Maryhill was a vast green space 250 years ago but when the Forth and Clyde Canal was buit approx 230 years ago, the area very quickly became an industrial town. Animals and plants have had to adapt to survive and they now use the Canal and River Klevin to find food and shelter. Join us in the launch of our new trails to explore nature at work in the heart of Maryhill and record your findings along the way using the trail leaflet. 

Please wear clothing suitable for mixed terrain and weather. 

Accessibility on the walk: 
The walk is approximately 1.4 miles/2.2km. It is a low level walk along the iconic sites of the Forth and Clyde Canal and RIver Kelvin. Mostly wide, smooth and flat. One short steep stretch going down to the Kelvin Walk Way from the canal towpath with railings on one side for support.

Discover the hidden gems of Maryhill this Doors Open Day Festival by joining us at the Burgh Halls for free guided walks, tours, performances and workshops.

Maryhill Burgh Halls are looking forward to celebrating Doors Open Day on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September. With free walks, tours, workshops and performances, there is an exciting range of activities for all: 

Drop in between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September to visit the Burgh Halls and view the beautiful Victorian stained glass windows by Stephen Adam.  Get up close and handle objects from our collection and find out more about Maryhill's dynamic history. 

There's something for everyone at the Burgh Halls this year with stained glass inspired arts and crafts, music activities and Victorian games for families.

We're delighted to welcome back Maryhill Heritage Choir who will perform on Saturday 16th September bringing their mix of traditional Scottish, Irish and folk Gospel songs to the Burgh Halls.  

Dee Leckie is bringing her popular handweaving workshops back to the Burgh Halls in October and is delivering taster sessions during Doors Open Day. Come and try this handy craft and learn how to make an array of scarves, ties, purses, and decorations.

Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust is committed to collecting and making accessible the history of the Burgh Halls and Maryhill area. After 6 years of public events and building up the Trust’s heritage collections, the Trust aims to take the next step in sharing local history by establishing the Maryhill Museum. The museum will be a place to share our local history collection and offer opportunities for community displays. Maryhill Museum will advance local access to facilities in arts, heritage and culture and engage with the local and wider community to safeguard and celebrate Maryhill's history.

Art, Heritage and Health and Wellbeing Guided Walks

We've partnered with the arts strategy team from the new Maryhill Health Centre to deliver guided walks with local history and/or pop up art along the way on Fridays at 1pm. The next art themed walk is on 31st March. Join the Village Storytelling Centre to share stories and perspectives on the environment along the canal walkway. For all the walks, turn up from 12.30pm at Maryhill Health Centre, 51 Gairbraid Avenue, G20 8FB to register for the free creative walk. 

New craft workshops at Maryhill Burgh Halls for 2017

Join Elisabeth Viguie Culshaw in a 5 week evening class to master the basics of stencilling and explore the everyday use of stencils for design and decoration. 

Dates: Monday evenings from 23rd January to 20th February

Ages: Suitable for 16+
Price: £35.00 total for the 5 week course (excl. VAT and Eventbrite booking fee).
 

From making your own cards and wrapping paper to designing and cutting multilayer stencilled pictures to decorate your home, we will have a look at many uses for stencilling in every day design and decorating. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience looking to create more complicated designs. You'll be taught stencilling techniques and be inspired to create your own designs and themes. All materials are provided at the workshop.

About the Artist:
Creator of the Glasgow Stencil brand, Elisabeth Viguie Culshaw has 25 years of experience of art in practice, teaching and research. Inspired by Mackintosh designs, Elisabeth has exhibited and taught all around Glasgow, in the Lighthouse, House for an Art Lover and for the National Trust for Scotland. Along with upcycling and stencilling, Elisabeth also enjoys decoupage and papier mâché.

We are exploring the fascinating cultures of Kosova, Shetland and Eritrea, inspired by the book 'Second Home: A collection of work by Writers With Futures'. We welcome contributors to the book as guest speakers, giving us insight into their experiences of moving their lives and resettling in Scotland.

• Workshop Prices: Workshops are £8 each or there is the option to book onto both workshops for a discounted price of £14.00 (ex. VAT).

• Age: Suitable for adults or young people 12 years+ accompanied by a supervising adult.

Cancellation policy: Please note that we are unable to refund workshop fees if you cancel your booking. Refunds may only be considered under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Heritage Manager. Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, tutor illness or circumstances outwith our control. In these instances, we will endeavour to offer you a place on an alternative course/rescheduled class, or provide a full refund.
